What would you say to a person when he/she asks, "how can you be drunk in the spirit when the bible says to be sober minded?"

When you’re drunk in the natural, you do not have sound judgment. You are ‘under the influence’ of the substance you have put into your body.

When you’re drunk in the Spirit, you have sound judgment. You are ‘under the influence’ of the Person of the Spirit that resides in you.

If being influenced by Holy Spirit isn’t considered ‘sober-minded’ then I don’t know what is (Rom 8:5-6)

The person who asked that does bring a reasonable point of discussion.

A lot of the people [in my experience] that say they regularly get ‘drunk’ in the Spirit, don’t actually produce much fruit of the Spirit. Being ‘drunk’ seems to define their entire spiritual experience and it becomes the focus rather than a tool to love, to disciple, and to set captives free.

In the end, judge the fruit. We are commanded to do that. If the fruit of being ‘drunk’ in the Spirit just leads to more ‘drunk parties’, then you’ve missed the point.

Drunkenness in the natural makes do you crazy things that you would not normally do, things that you often don’t even remember and sometimes are ashamed of after you see the video on youtube the next day.

Drunkenness in the Spirit should make you do crazy things that set the tone for how you normally live, things that actually transform people’s lives, things that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
